In 2006 the Department of Health England (DH) commissioned Skills for Health and Skills for Care to develop a set of Common Core Principles for Supporting Self Care for the health and social care workforce. This was in response to a commitment made in the White Paper Our health, our care, our say’ to develop a competence framework for supporting self care. Development work on the principles was completed in July 2007, and a final report including recommendations submitted to DH. The principles along with the recommendations were signed off by DH in October 2007 and launched formally by Ministers on the 1st May 2008. Subsequently DH requested that Skills for Health and Skills for Care work with them to support embedding of the principles across the sectors.  A key element of this support for implementation was the involvement of jdee consultancy in the establishment of a pilot site in social care with a further two in health to explore and test the development of learning for self care, underpinned by the principles.

The pilots completed their work at the end of March 2009 and jdee were invited to London on the 24th June 2009, along with the joint self care projects to present their work to Angela Hawley – Self Care Policy Lead (Department of Health) along with a select number of Skills for Health and Skills for Care representatives.

The aim of the event was to:

  • share the outcomes from the joint self care pilot projects
  • look at joint opportunities regionally and nationally to take the learning forward and share what best practice is already happening.

An independent evaluation of the pilot sites has been commissioned and  will consist of an evaluation report which will draw out key themes from across the sites, an in depth case study from each site and a video case study will be made available in the coming months. The next phase of the work following the June event will be to disseminate the learning from the pilot sites across the two sectors.
